Futuristic Metropolitan of Cambodia (CamKo City)….SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS.
Phnom Penh (AsiaNews/Agencies) – World City, a joint venture between South Korean and Cambodian companies, has begun building a satellite city near Phnom Penh. The US$ 2 billion urban development project will be financed by South Korea’s Shinhan Bank.
The South Korean bank will provide US$ 65 million to build Camko City’s first thousand residential units, and infrastructure for the development, which is expected to take between 11 and 15 years to complete. The first phase is due for completion in two years and the latter phases will include a university, a hospital and schools.
The development is the latest outgrowth of Cambodia’s building boom—one of the country’s most visible signs of recovery after decades of civil war and destitution.
Bolstered by its newfound political stability and large injections of donor aid, Cambodia achieved GDP growth of 10.5 per cent last year. And new houses are being marketed to the growing numbers of young Cambodians.
“After the Khmer Rouge regime ended [in 1979], there were more children than average. Now they are 25, 26 years old, and they have families who need homes,” said Hang Chuon Naron, secretary-general of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Average price tags are US$ 120,000.
Not everyone is enthusiastic about the trend. Some have voiced concern about Cambodia’s ability to manage its urban growth, particularly when 35 per cent of the population still lives below the poverty line.
“We should not have huge developments surrounded by slums, with the poorest of the poor looking up at the skyscrapers,” said Mu Sochua, secretary-general of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.
Noting Phnom Penh’s “limited and inadequate housing supply,” Robert Taliercio, senior Cambodia economist for the World Bank, cited the capital’s need to manage its building boom without losing its character. “[I]t would be a shame if it became just another generic-looking East Asian megalopolis,” he said.

So what do you think?
Is good for Cambodia? Why? Why not? What’s the agenda behind this massive project? Do you think it’s going to be materialized? What would be the effect on the poor Cambodians? the farmers? What kind of people would live in such a place? More jobs? …..
What else can you think of?

Wrong, Khmer ppl are driven by dreams they can see. This project will give hope to many. Hmm…something like, we’re no longer a third world country so let’s act like one; it is in the nature of Khmer ppl. Sometime we just don’t know where we belong to the great whole. Once we find our place we will build on it from there. We were just lost, that was all.
I wish I can be part of the project sometime later. Our nation is reviving at a good rate. I am really happy. We can all call it home again. Camko City marks the new beginning for the once proud Khmer.

I have actually gotten a chance to go out and visit what camko city is right now. It is impressive in a sense that there is a lot of work being done. I have lots of mixed feelings because all the surrounding areas are very poor. These people will never be able to afford to live there. I feel, also, that this is going to separate the people even more. The rich foreign investors vs. the poor locals. I have another problem with this whole project because it is funded mostly by the Koreans. Where is the Cambodia initiative?
The greatest buildings, greatest City in Cambodia was built many many many years ago, and they still stand…Love to Angkor…

I believe that Camko project is one of good projects in Cambodia. It is the starting mile stone for Cambodia to catch up with other country in the region. I do not agree with ” Mu Sochua”. She is so optimistic, she have never said anything good in Cambodia……. We should have a big dream, go forward,….. For the poor, we have never forget, for example this mega project has provided a lot of work to the poor.

I’m concerned with what strings maybe attatched to the investment. I’m all for the idea but I don’t want this one City to give S.Korea some major leverage over Cambodia. My sympathies are for the poor people lookin up at the apartments too.
Khmer people are driven by dreams they can see, lol, wrong. Lets not forget the government they’re in. The rich get richer and the poorer stay poor or poorer. Khmer Government needs to help develop the poor community.
Even with my skeptisims, best of wishes to the Camko project and prospects.

I think it is great that Cambodia is finally growing, but they should also consider those who will be unfortunate to live in such a place like this. Just like any great city, there should be a place for the poor, hence shelter.

The computer animation and architectural vision looks very beautiful. Phnom Penh needs growth and renovation to its infrastructures but we must do it such a way that the outcome would not only benefit the rich and exclusive few. The government must remind itself that economic growth without social justice only benefits the rich and the corrupt. These high rise buildings are not built for the poor and the destitute; it is built for people with money. For far too long the Cambodian people have lived through multiple wars, poverty and political intimidation. It is time that the Cambodian government pays attention to the wellbeing of its people, not just the city’s infrastructures. If no one cares then one day the Cambodian people will have no place to live, if everything is for sale.

As a cambodian, I hope Camko City will successfully finish the construction as planned to give Phnom Penh, Cambodia a new landscape. Camko City is a bit far from the downtown, so the satellite city should be well equipped, such as schools, hospitals, markets, super markets, cinemas, parks, etc, not only just to have, but also should be good enough.
